Cutting Edges 1: Rope (1948)' Film Review

Figure 1- Movie poster
Rope (1948) was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and written by  Arthur Lauents, Hume Cronyn and Ben Hecht and  the music was composed by Leo F.Forbstein. The film is about a story of two men called Brandon (John Dell) and Philip (Farley Granger) who kill their friend David for fun during the house party."Good and evil, right and wrong were invented for the ordinary average man, the inferior man, because he needs them," claims Brandon, the deluded mastermind of the murder." (Hutchinson 2015). The film also James Stewart as a good guy.
"He’s in the chest! It’s right there!” For me, it wasn’t enough of a “hook” – I didn’t know whether I was supposed to be rooting for the two men to get away with the crime, or whether I should be cheering on Stewart’s character." (Snow 2011)

When the film was made the camera they were using was so big for the set that they would knock over all the furniture. The film's claustrophobic feel is strengthened trough the coffin-chest that is rarely out of shot and the camera follows the actors around every square inch of the confined set. It shows that in each shot taken the camera would either pass by an object or character, or get very close to a character to help with the storyline.

figure 2- House party

Figure 3-  Rope set

The director Hitchcock decided to shoot the film in this way, where he had to devise an innovative method for moving the camera. Rope was Hitchcock's  first film shot in Technicolour means the camera he used was the size of a small car also followed the actors through the set pieces  of the individual rooms. The furniture had to be placed on the wheels and rolled them out of the way of the monster camera with the film crew to move as coordinated to swoop in and silently roll set pieces away to make room for the camera.

This film is interesting because of the camera angle and close up shot for each scene in the film to give the viewer a clue as to the mind set off characters.

Cutting Edge: Psycho 1960 Film Review

Figure 1- Movie poster
Psycho (1960) was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and written Joseph Stefano. This is psychological thriller, powerful and complex is a tale of a women on the (Janet Leight) who checks into the mysterious Bates Motel.

"The disturbing film's theme of corruptibility, confused identities, voyeurism, human vulnerabilities and  victimization for the deadly effect of money. It was an oedipal murder and dark past histories are realistically revealed." (Filmsite 2/02/16) This quote is in part referencing to the character of Norman Bates who spies on female lead and confused  identities.

.
Figure 2- Shower scene

There are many different camera techniques used in the film. These techniques contribute to the rise of tension in the film. Figure 2 The famous shower scene from the classic Hitchcock film doesn't show the knife actually puncturing flesh of victim and the amount of blood is very minimum. However the three minute sequence scene is still shocking today and unnerves the viewer with its brutality. However the film shot was taken in black and white to soften down the murder scene to the viewer from the vibrant red colour of the blood scene. I fact for the scene chocolate syrup was used.

The shower scene was the turning point in the narrative and we began to learn more about Norman Bates character. Norman Bates cross-dresses as his mother, kills people and he acts both as Norman and Mother role.

Figure 3 - Norman Bates
"Norman Bates generally lives two different lives. His two lives - first as himself  ‘Norman Bates’  a caring and loving lad, a conscientious and civic person in all manners possible as a hero of the film. The second as his deceased mother Mrs. Bates, a dominating and evil person who controls her and her son's life most of the time. She is jealous of other women and a sufferer of a male infidelity she protects Norman from the sensual influences of opposite sex his entire life. Then she motivates him to kill the women who he finds attractive. And finally Norman is shown sarcastically smilling at the camera." (Brill 2014)

The story of Norman Bates was based on the real-life killing  of woman by Ed Gein 1957. As Breslow explains, "They found this particular woman," says Rebello, "She had been unfortunately tortured and dressed out like a steer. ... And the house was kind of a charnel house of decomposing body parts, skull heads line up on shelves." (Breslow 2008). The fact that psycho is based on real events helps make the film more sinister as the viewer is aware of the facts behind the fiction.

Cutting Edges 1: 'La Jetée (1962)' Film Review

Figure 1: Movie poster
La Jette (1962)was directed by Chris Marker is one the most influential, French science- fiction films and short film ever made as well as a series of still mages. The film is about a tale  of an unnamed  hero, who is haunted by an image from his childhood. It is set in a post- apocalyptic Paris, the main plot is of a prisoner chosen to go back through time in attempt to save the present.

It is about the one with the only thing you could called narration and  accompanied by the music, sound effect and voice-over narration. It contains only one brief shot of filmed motion  and one moment in which the camera appears to move along with pulling back from the opening still of the pier or observation deck at Pair Orly Airport. The narration sound effect and some mumbled German dialogue accompany a montage of still black- and white photographs by Jean Chiabaud at the various dramatic places to create the illusion of a moving picture.

Figure 2- Pair Orly Airport
La Jette feels not-only like a photo-roman but also like a photographed storyboard for a science fiction film.Terry Gilliam used La Jette as an inspiration for such film in 1995 the rather more frenetic 12 Monkeys and the qualities of La Jette lead to the viewer is consciously or otherwise to reappraise their conception of the nature with cinema and it relation to time and a motion. The film has a simply capture motion, photographing the moving object at the rate of twenty-four frame a second.(Romney 2007). "Although La Jette is a stunning example of graceful science- fiction drama, the film  really is an exploration of time and memory, and how these two things are perceived." (Melin 1983)

The subject matter of this film ( time travel) is interesting however the speed at which it is shot make it confusing so the viewer has to concentrate to understand.

Only God Forgives 2013 - Film Review

Figure 1- Movie poster

Only God Forgives (2013)  is a visually stunning film by Danish director and written by Nicolas Winding Renfn . The movie is about the beauty, grace and horror of martial arts and it contains strong bloody violence which  features a lot of Thai language with subtitles and spoken dialogue."Emotionally, our artistic expression consists of sex or violence. It all boils down to those two pure emotions that we have." (Arikan 2013)
The director has stated that he wanted "Only God Forgives" the movie to be a Western set in Bangkok. The film was shot in Bangkok but the way it has been shown, according to Al Arikan, writing for Roger Eber.com, suggested that  the Thai capital comes across like the film itself as affected and artificial.

Two brother Billy (Tom Burke) and Julian (Ryan Gosling) are working in Thailand as boxing promoters and drugs dealers. The first few minutes of the story, the elder brother Billy rapes and kills a 16 year old prostitute and he is killed by the girl's distraught father The mother of the brothers ( Kristin Scott Thomas) shows up to collect the body of her favorite son.

Figure 2 - Crystal
The film reason why the colours are so thematic is because of the hidden symbolic or possibly real nature of the film premise. The Chang characters is suggested as God in human form and these in  his almost psychic abilities good visual design and direction. Nicholas Winding Renfn said in the interview that he encouraged actor to think he is a god . He symbolically represents God and is portrayed as larger than life. powerful and highly respected.  The red and orange lights provide a fiery hellish colour scheme along with Bangkok  which is condemned to rainy, smoggy and moody looking area.

Figure 3- Red and orange light

The film also concentrates on the unhealthy relationship between mother and son and has been likened to the Oedipus complex.
"If the tables were turned your brother would have found your killer and brought his head to me on a fucking platter.” Crystal’s attitude towards Julian swings between aggressive disappointment and sexual possessiveness, defining his emotional repression punctuated with eruptions of masochistic violence." (Llinares 2013)

Space Oddities - Suspiria 1977

Movie Review

Figure 1- Movie poster
Suspiria (1977)was directed by Dario Argento with the written Dario Argento and Dari Nicolodi. It is Italian horror film as well as like all  horror movies with the same theme such as gore, violence, and insane killers. The story is about involving a young American ballet dancer who arrives at a dance academy in Germany where some horrendous murder have taken place. The film has a visually stunning that is using  different colours and terrified music to create some awesome atmospheric scene.

"Suspiria ( Celeste and Bells)" is the track that actually features narration. Keyboardist Claudio Simonetti chants non- grammatical nonsense about witches, while celesta and bells perform a subtle version of the main theme." (Biodrowsk 2008)

Figure 2 - Still images

The set design of the film are basic colours along with  the main colour is red. The red  shows that is very strong which often  used to signify a dangerous area  to beware when a character is put in a situation that could be life threatening with very simple and huge shapes as well as hint of blues. The blue area shows that are often suggested to be calmer and less dangerous. They are other colours such as green and yellow rarely used colours in the film that sometime appears in Suzy's room with the green colour show up.

"In the end, however, it is not enough to sustain Suspiria through its many slow scenes. The result is a film of highs and lows, worth  seeing for it bravura style but falling short of the critical mass that would achieve masterpiece status." (Biodrowsk 2008)

This leads to several other murder all done in a particular ways such as her friend and ex-student was murdered by seeing the windows or mirrors. It felt that there was secret passenger through the whole building letting the murder found to his victims easily.

Space Oddities - Repulsion (1965)

Movie Review

Repulsion  (1965) was directed by Roman Polanski most brilliant films including a deeply disturbing, horribly powerful psychological thriller and a scary movie. The film is set in London during 1960's and it is about the horrors of someone with a severe mental illness also it is black and white movie with a girl Carol (Deneuve). The cinematography is great in this movie due to Catherine Deneuve as the young women is both sympathetic and terrifying.

Figure 1 - Movie Review
Carol is horrified by other men's because substantial fear of sexual relation in any from. At the began of the film she is a shy women when it comes to dating with any kind of relationship of a men such as when a gentlemen offer Carol for dinner the next evening and she fears form  men and she murdered him without any noise from actors,
Figure  2- Still image

Figure 2 Soon the young women is left alone for a weekend when her sister and boyfriend go out of town. She starred at the crack in the ceiling she can see them growing. Figure 3 in the film they is a scene as her hallucination grow more intense and vivid  a man molesting her becomes repeated multiple times. A man hands literally emerge from the wall to claw and grasp her. In the credit to the relentless atmosphere of dread, this striking visual becomes a prefer metaphor for how terrifying Carol's world has come to reflect her poisoned inner- psychology.

Figure 3 -  Still images
The choice of  the music and soundscape in the film is chosen carefully to make the audience feel uneasy deliberately. "It is also a haunting adumbration of a small but piercing human tragedy, and it is almost a perfect specimen of a very special cinema-sound technique." ( Crowther 1965)
The opening theme sounds are  unsettling with its monotonous tone and steady, slow rhythm with a banging of the drums and there is a faint drone going on the background adding to the overall sound. The sound of the ticking clock serves as an indicator  that something terrible is about to occur. Also Carol is aware of this and she waits in the terrible anticipation, before turning around to see her rapist in her bed.

Space Oddities- The Shining 1980

Movie Review

The Shining 1980 was directed by Stanley Kubrick, it is a gothic horror film and does have the  blood-letting and gore of the more modern films in horror genre. The film is based on Stephen kings novel of the same name..The film story at the beginning was about a perfecly normal family spending the winter in  an empty hotel. While the film continues some ordinary shots that taken of the actors are interrupted by sequence of corridors which blood flood out from such as lift lobby suggesting to the viewer something sinister as happened, or is about to happen, in the hotel.

Figure 1 Movie poster

Figure 2 - The young boy

Figure 2 The young boy 'Danny'  friend 'Tony' speaks and tells strange things will happen but haven't  happened yet such as seeing flashes of images throughout the beginning of the two murdered girls.  He always rides his bike in the hotel corridors then the two twin-sisters appears from nowhere to ask the boy to play with them. He got a afraid and escaped from the girls. Danny is being left behind but  he told  to beware and stay away from room 237 because  of violent things had could happend there. The psychic gift of reading minds and seeing the past and future is a feature of the story.

Figure 3 - Still image

Figure 3 Nearly end of the film when the lady character Shelley Duvall as Wendy  Torrance turns into 'Olive Oly' a bit of the characteristics in the Popeye cartoon  show because she feel nervous also can able to see her eyes pop out and hands movemoment changing.

The writer King hates the way Kubrick portraied the character of Wendy Torrance as played by a hysterical Shelley Duvall. “Shelley Duvall as Wendy is really one of the most misogynistic characters ever put on film, she’s basically just there to scream and be stupid, and that’s not the woman that I wrote about,” he said.( Hatfull 2013)

King also going to say about the film:

"It's cold, I'm not cold guy. I think one of the things people relate to in my books is this warmth, there's a reaching out and saying to the reader, ' I want you to be a part of this' with Kubrick's The Shinning I felt that it was very cold. We're looking at these people but they're like ants in anthill, aren't they doing interesting things, these little insects." (Hatfull 2013)

For this film, Kubrick has provided spatially impossible room sets. This add another psychological layer to the film because it is attempt to disorientate audiences " the set feels inescapable and overwhelming (Eddy 26.7.2011)
This film is highly rated  by site such as rottentomato.
